1982 Guild D40 acoustic guitar for sale, made in the famed Westerly, RI factory.
This is a great sounding and playing guitar. It features solid mahogany back and sides with a solid spruce top, spruce bracing, and a nitro finish that has aged nicely. The back and sides appear black, but in direct light you can see that it’s a very dark brownish red tint, and you can see the woodgrain.
The tone is somewhat more rich & full than a typical mahogany-sided dreadnaught, and the highs are crisp and chimey without being harsh.
The original nut and saddle have been upgraded to bone, and it has a fresh setup including level & crown and ToneRite tone conditioning treatment to help open it up. The action is low and smooth, making this guitar easy to play either as a strummer or for flatpicking.
It’s in good condition overall and is structurally sound. There are no loose braces, the neck joint is tight, and it does not need a neck reset. There is a small 2″ hairline crack on the back of the guitar. This crack is stable and is between 2 braces, and 2 luthiers agreed that it would not get worse. Guild builds their acoustics with stout bracing that doesn’t impede the sound, and they’re built to last.
It appears that it spent some time in an old case on top of a faux leather strap, which has dimpled the finish on the back in the center. It has a similar blemish on the back of the neck, probably where the nitro finish rested on a foam padded guitar stand for a long time.
The guitar includes a newer TKL hard shell case that I bought when I purchased the guitar about 6 years ago.
